Who We Are

The Island Heights Volunteer Fire Company is comprised of a dedicated group of volunteers who devote much of their free time to serving the community. In addition to responding to calls for service at all hours of the day, the volunteers routinely conduct training exercises, check apparatus and equipment, clean the firehouse, fundraise and participate in community events. The time devoted to preparing for and responding to calls for service is prioritized by the volunteers over their personal time, including all fundraising efforts by which the company is entirely funded. This devotion and sense of responsibility, contribution and pride is what makes the company such a tight-knit family.

Requirements

New members are always welcome and encouraged to join the effort in protecting and serving OUR community. Requirements for active membership include:

-At least 18 years of age
-Capable of passing physical examination
-Capable of passing self-contained breathing apparatus fit test
-Satisfy specified meeting, drill, event and emergency response attendance percentages

Explorer Post

Anyone ages 14 through 22 are also welcome to join Fire Explorer Post 53. Fire exploring is a program run by the Boy Scouts of America to expose young adults interested in the fire service to every day activities, membership, emergency operations, and other key components of fire fighting. Fire exploring is an excellent stepping stone to membership in the fire company, or a great experience to anyone wishing to learn more about the fire service. Exploring provides the following opportunities:

-Issuance of individual personal protective equipment
-In-house fire fighting skills training
-Participation in Fire Company events
-Response to emergencies aboard apparatus
-Safely performing various exterior tasks at emergency scenes (supervised)
